Born in Dublin; after father's death in 1940, is brought up by mother and maternal grandparents in London

Attends Highgate School, where taught by Kyffin Williams RA

Conscripted into the Royal Navy and works as an interpretation on trips to Russia

Enters the Slide School of Fine Art; teachers include William Coldstream and Keith Vaughan

Solo show at the Redfern Gallery; most of the work is sold before the opening. Moves into Coldstream's old flat in Manchester Street - his home for the next 36 years
