Biography

1905 Born in Dulwich
1923 Studied at Slade School of Fine Art; took evening classes at the Central School of Arts and Crafts
1924-25 Studied at the Academia de San Fernando
1926-27 Studied at the Académie Julian; met SW Hayter - both taught by Joseph Hecht
1928 Attended at the École des Beaux-Arts under Louvrier in the summer
1929 Visited Picabia at Mougins; shared a studio with SW Hayter
1930 Married Marcelle Marguerite Florenty
1931-39 Started to make animated films
1936 Produced illustrations for Cocteau's 'Les Enfants Terribles'; appointed Art Director for London Films
1941-45 Became an Official War Artist (Army Captain); travelled around the world to various theatres of war
1946 War paintings exhibited at the Tate and Jeu de Paume, Paris
1947 Made the first of his lithographs for J Lyons & Co
1948-54 Taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts
1955 Bought a house in Le Boulvé
1954-71 Taught printmaking at the Slade (under Sir William Coldstream)
1961 V&A commission for three permanent display plates 'Trees'
1963 Joined Engraving Faculty, British School at Rome
1965 First President of the Print Makers Council
1965-66 Visiting Professor at Minneapolis School of Art, Minnesota
1971 TV programme about Gross -'A Printmaker's Workshop'
1972 TV programme about Gross -'inter alia' as part of 'Artists in Wartime'
1973 Elected President of Film Jury at Ninth International JICA Animated Film Festival at Annecy, France, for his work as an innovator in cartoon films
1976 Abandoned etching for burin engraving
1980 Elected Royal Academician; 'The Very Rich Hours of Le Boulvé' published - illustrated and written by Gross
1982 Appointed CBE
1984 Died at Le Boulvé
