Large Abstracts
This exhibition focuses on large abstract works produced by some of the most distinguished British artists of the twentieth century. It includes several examples of paintings from the 1950s and '60s by Paul Feiler, which were part of the retrospective at Jerwood Gallery in 2018. Also on show is one of the largest canvases painted by William Gear, entitled Sussex Landscape, which was shown at the John Moores exhibition in 1959, and at the critically acclaimed centenary exhibition that opened at Towner, Eastbourne, and toured to City Art Centre, Edinburgh, in 2015-16. Patrick Procktor is represented by The Black Set, an ambitious painting consisting of four conjoined panels, and was selected by Bryan Robertson for the The New Generation in 1964 at the Whitechapel Gallery. There will be further paintings by Frank Avray Wilson, Patrick Heron, Adrian Heath, Cecil Stephenson and Bryan Wynter, alongside Francis Davison collages, prints by Patrick Caulfield and Bridget Riley, and sculpture by Anthony Caro and Bryan Kneale.
