Brendan Neiland
The City and Beyond
‘The city has been central to my paintings. Over the years, my way of viewing and painting the imagery has changed. From the shiny surfaces of cars to the distorted reflection of the city buildings within the car surfaces, to the actual buildings and their reflections. Finally, embracing all elements of the city life: contemporary buildings, people, traffic, language, shop windows and powerful city advertisements. I have walked and walked in cities throughout the world. They uplift and fascinate me.’
Brendan Neiland 2020
For forty years Brendan Neiland has worked with Brad Faine of Coriander studios to produce silkscreen prints. Neiland describes how ‘I spray the ink onto the seritrace so that I am using the same process as I do for my paintings. Generally, I will use between 18 and 24 colours and a print will take about 6 weeks.’
The three Scottish landscapes were produced for a commission from ScotRail, that took Neiland all over the wonderful dramatic landscape of the highlands and lowlands of Scotland. Seen from the train, they show the unifying feature of reflection throughout.
