John Carter at 80: Selected Works
2 March - 8 April 2022

The Redfern Gallery are delighted to present John Carter at 80: Selected Works, celebrating the life and career of John Carter RA on his 80th birthday.

"In 1966, writing in the catalogue to the third New Generation exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, the critic Robert Hughes identified an aspect of John Carter’s work that has since become an oft-repeated hook for critics, as much as a question for the artist to answer. Hughes suggested that Carter’s work ‘occupies a half-way point between painting and sculpture’. William Packer, writing five years later, at the time of Carter’s second solo exhibition at the Redfern Gallery, held that ‘the objects which he so carefully makes like a sculptor, he uses as a painter. His is the illusion of perspective, not the real thing. The events he talks about are pictorial, not actual, though they are real enough.’"

Accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Andrew Wilson.

Private view: 6-8pm 3rd March 2022
