Eileen Agar in new show celebrating the life of Derek Jarman

November 28, 2021

Work by Eileen Agar features in a new exhibition focusing on the art and life of Derek Jarman, at the University of Southampton's John Hansard Gallery.

Entitled Derek Jarman's Modern Nature, the exhibition focuses on the artist's lifelong passion for plants, the human body, and the landscape, and draws connections with numerous art movements, from the Neo-Romanticism of John Piper and Graham Sutherland, to British Surrealism, represented by Agar and John Banting. Richard Porter and Wolfgang Tillmans are among the younger generation of artists to have taken inspiration from Jarman, and whose work is on show.

Edited by curator, Philip Hoare, the exhibition catalogue features essays by the best-selling author Ali Smith, actress Tilda Swinton, and musician Neil Tennant.

The exhibition continues until 26 February 2022.
