Francis Davison in new show of British abstract painting

June 13, 2022

Francis Davison features in Celebration: British Abstract Painting, a major new show at the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate.

The exhibition features sixty large-scale works, each of which, according to curator Sam Cornish, "are positive, affirmative statements in light, space and colour, and the materiality of paint and canvas".

The exhibition spans six decades, starting in the 1960s with Patrick Heron, through to John Hoyland's acrylic paintings of the 1980s, to more recent canvases by Mali Morris. Artists who enjoyed much success in the late 1960s and 1970s, such as Gillian Ayres, John Edwards, Albert Irvin and Gary Wragg, are also included.

The exhibits belong to a private collector, and the collection has been amassed over a period of more than forty years.

Celebration: British Abstract Painting runs until 4 September 2022.
