Pierre Skira celebrated in new show at the Picasso Museum
October 23, 2022
Pierre Skira is the focus of a new solo exhibition at the Picasso Museum in Antibes.
This exhibition will be the first to juxtapose a new set of large-format pastels with engravings completed over the past twenty years. While the pastels are entirely abstract, the engravings tread a fine line between abstraction and figuration.
Skira began his career with gestural abstract paintings in oil, for which he won the Biennale des Jeunes Prize in 1963, but has worked exclusively in the medium of dry pastel for the past four decades. After completing meticulous still life studies of books, musical instruments or vanitases, Skira has recently dedicated his practise to abstract compositions in which he explores colour relationships and textures. These have been shown at the Redfern, in solo exhibitions of 2015 and 2019.
His latest abstract studies can be seen in Pierre Skira: Pastel's Ways of Being, which runs from 22 October to 8 January 2023.
