1921 Sent away to board at Christ's Hospital
1939 Left the Lintas advertising agency to paint full time; his brother, a fighter pilot, killed
1941 Conscripted into the Non-Combatant Corps
1946 Lived with John Minton and Graham Sutherland; started working at Camberwell School of Art
1948 Started teaching at the Central School of Art
1951 Included in the Arts Council's 'Sixty Paintings for ‘51', as part of the Festival of Britain
1953 Included in Patrick Heron’s 'Space in Colour'
1954 Started teaching at the Slade
1958 Diagnosed with depression
1959 Taught a term at Iowa University
1962 Retrospective at the Whitechapel Gallery
1977 Committed suicide
