Biography

1901 Born in Hackney
1917-21 Studied chemistry and geology at King's College, London
1922-25 Worked for Anglo-Iranian Oil Company in Abadan; began to paint more consistently
1926 Moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian; first prints; met Joseph Hecht; married Edith Fletcher (div. 1929)
1927 Established his first printmaking workshop
1929 First contact with Surrealist group artists
1933 Moved to No.17 Campagne Première (Atelier 17 comes into existence); exhibited with Surrealist group in Paris
1934 First exhibition of Atelier 17 artists in Paris and London
1936 Exhibited in, and helped organise, the International Surrealist Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries, London
1937 Visited Spain during the Spanish Civil War (at the invitation of the Republican Government)
1938 Published 'Solidarity' for the Spanish war effort
1939 Published 'Fraternity' for the Spanish war effort; left Paris for London; worked on camouflage techniques
1940 Gave classes at California School of Fine Arts and at New School for Social Research (course known as Atelier 17); married Helen Phillips (div. 1973)
1943 Awarded Annual Philadelphia Print Club Prize for 'Laocoön'
1944 Exhibition by Atelier 17 at MoMA, New York
1945 Established Atelier 17 as an independent workshop in New York
1948 'Unstable Woman' won Purchase Prize at Brooklyn Museum Annual Print Exhibition
1949 Taught printmaking at the Art Institute of Chicago and made Professor of Fine Arts at Brooklyn College
1950 Returned to Paris, reestablishing Atelier 17 in various locations
1951 Won the Légion d'Honneur
1955 New York Atelier closed
1958 Represented Great Britain at Venice Biennale with William Scott and Kenneth Armitage
1959 Awarded OBE
1960 Awarded International Grand Prize at the Second Tokyo International Print Biennale
1968 Made Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres; awarded CBE
1972 Received Grand Prix des Arts de la Ville de Paris
1974 Married Désirée Moorhead
1978 Elected Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Honorary Doctorate Hamline University, Minnesota
1982 Elected Honorary Member of the Royal Academy
1983 Honorary Doctorate, New School for Social Research, New York
1986 Made a Commandeur des Arts et Lettres
1988 Purchase by British Museum of Hayter's archive of his own prints; died
