Biography

1915 Born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire
1930 Left school at 14 to work in Curry's Cycle Shop
1939-45 In active service, captured and sent to a German POW camp, befriending Adrian Heath
1945 Married Kathleen Clarke
1946 Attended St Ives School of Art; met Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon
1947-51 Studied at Camberwell School of Art
1950 Takes a studio in Porthmeor, painted the first of his 'Walk Along the Quay' series
1951 Assisted Barbara Hepworth with 'Contrapuntal Forms'; attended Penwith School of Arts; elected member of the Penwith Society of Arts
1952-54 Visiting lecturer at Bath Academy of Art and Willseden School of Art; met William Scott
1954-56 Awarded a Gregory Fellowship at the University of Leeds
1956 Taught at Leeds College of Art
1957 Became a member of the London Group
1957-59 Returned to St Ives permanently; Tate purchased 'Khaki and Lemon' (1956)
1960 Solo show in New York
1963 Taught at Coventry School of Art and Design, moved to Banbury
1964 Visiting lecturer at the University of Reading; taught at San Jose, California; fellowship at Newcastle University
1965 Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Reading; prizewinner at the 5th John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize exhibition
1967 Summer teaching in Voss, Norway
1969 Prizewinner at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland: Open Painting Exhibition; first of three visits to Elizabeth Frink in France
1974 Moved to Newlyn, Cornwall
1975 Summer teaching in Banff, Canada
1977 Appointed Professor of Painting at the University of Western Ontario, Canada
1979 Summer teaching at the Umeå Summer School, Sweden
1981 Retired from his post at the University of Reading, made Professor Emeritus; visited Russia to see Kandinsky's and Matisse's works
1992 Elected Royal Academician
1998 Knighted
1999 Awarded Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Exeter
2001 Visited Venice with John Hoyland
2003 Died
